Cool New Skyaak Action (Video Clip!)

These guys are summer neighbors of ours. You can plainly see that something is going on here with the flight characteristics of Skyaak. The 'Ring-Wings' come to life in the hands of a young Skyaak Master, who can cause the ring-wing flier to rapidly spin on its axis.

This spinning action greatly enhances both the loft and stability of the craft in flight.

It is very cool to see this aeronautical principle in practice, out of the lab and in the field!

It bodes well for the positive incidence trajectory of the project.

My buddy Gumbee dropped over on the wkend with his brand new Martguerita maker to share some of the delicious, refreshing concoction. He had just gotten back from a quick trip down to Mexico and had bought a large jug of Tequila that he was now pouring liberally into the mix.

After a few deep slurps we went up to the grassy field just south of here and tossed one of my Skyaak units around. Gumbee informed me beforehand with a chuckle that he loved throwing stuff around. He had been a formidable force in college football down in the states and is built like a pro wrestler. A very nice, good-natured guy but you wouldn't want to screw around with him, if you know what I mean.

You could get crushed like a bug.

Holy mackerel, we soon found out that he is an absolute NATURAL Skyaak Champion! After only about 4 or 5 throws, Gumbee was smokin' hot. He was tossing his Skyaak around like like a seasoned pro. Which leads me to believe that a certain skill set combined with enthusiasm results in very rapid mastery of the Skyaak method.

This big guy has a reach of prolly 10-12 feet. He is 6 ft tall with great long arms to match. Very athletic and powerful to boot.

We have agreed that he next time I am in the city (Saskatoon) I am gonna call him up and we are getting together with some of his buddies to take a few Skyaak units through their paces.

This is exciting for me, as I have had the experience of trying to get some action out of other people over the summer who are not really that talented. Some of them were actually real pussies. They couldn't smoke a Skyaak with any conviction if their lives depended on it.

But not so with Gumbee. He was tossing his unit at airspeeds easily exceeding 45 ks per hr without even breaking a sweat. This guy has CHAMPION written all over him. A rare combination of great form, power and agility that has the potential to dominate!

Mind you, I have run into several other people (even of the female persuasion) who got their licks in, big time.

So I am now in the process of organizing another SKYAAK MEET that will be announced soon with all the details upcoming so watch this space.

To celebrate this auspicious date I am writing to add my voice to the worldwide chorus of voices that has been raised to underline the urgency of the climate change crisis.

I watched quite a bit of the SOS Live Earth concert and was really moved by all of the commitment shown by the organizers, the artists and the huge crowds that attended the live events.

It has been confirmed that SOS Live Earth pulled in the MOST EVER viewers and participants in ALL of RECORDED HISTORY for any event, ever!

This amazing feat tells us all that the time has finally arrived for the entire population of planet Earth to sit up and take notice. This is a wake-up call for polluting industries to realize that there horrible practices are NO LONGER ACCEPTABLE and that they had better take heed and invest in cleaning up their act or they will be faced with massive boycotts, embargoes and total shunning in the marketplace.

This has already started happening and will only increase exponentially as awareness mushrooms on a global scale.

I heard years ago from a person much smarter than me that there really is NO POLLUTION. ONLY a LACK of IMAGINATION to CONVERT WASTE INTO USEFUL ( or at least benign) BY-PRODUCTS.

Sure, implementing these technologies may at first appear to be a major expense for corporations, but compare the expense to the alternative of going out of business due to lack of consumer support and suddenly the expense starts looking like an astute investment in ongoing sustain-ability and viability!

For example, who knew ten or twenty years ago that the major automobile manufacturers would be scrambling in the early 21st century to re-invent themselves to come out with much more environmentally friendly products? Well guess what folks? It ain’t their green conscience driving the paradigm shift, it’s their desire to keep on making money by meeting the demands of the consumer. That’s you and me!

Its’ a bit shocking that the North American auto makers are losing this battle against their Asian competition. For some strange reason, it seems that they just don’t get it! I am offended when the domestic auto-makers whine and complain about the huge popularity of the off-shore imports when they have failed so miserably to stay ahead of the wave. It’s not like they don’t have billions of dollars to invest in research and development that would result in green technologies. But no, they prefer flashy, outmoded technology that just regurgitates more of the same. They look great but still cough out deadly emissions.

GET WITH the PROGRAM, you guys. Or face eventual obscurity!

I am looking forward to the day when parking in a shut garage with the engine running results in a glass of clear drinking water. That doesn’t kill you. So this form of suicide is null and void. A joke, actually. Can you imagine this future scenario?

As SOS Live Earth so vividly demonstrates, it will only be through co-operation and rallying around a consciousness of environmental stewardship that we have a whiff of hope for planetary sustain-ability. We all know that we simply cannot carry on this way. Think of what a freakin’ mess our great grandchildren will be stuck with if we do not take this seriously.

While my little efforts to compost bio-degradables, power down my computer, change to energy-efficient light-bulbs, drive less, buy locally produced food , grow a garden, insulate my house well, take military-style showers, etc., etc., etc. are bound to make a difference on a teeny-weeny scale, there’s no question that the really huge challenge ought not to be forgotten. And that is: the HUGE polluting industries have to get it through their pointy little heads that unless they clean up their act they are going down!

So don’t be misled into thinking that if you make some relatively painless little changes in your life-style then everything will be just tickedy-boo. That’s a lie. I believe that everyone gets to vote with their wallet. You can make a HUGE impact by demanding more eco-friendly vehicles, homes, communities. The big stuff. Your major investments. THAT’s where we all have the power to make huge strides forward.

In the meantime, I would encourage everyone who reads this post to pop into www.LiveEarth.org and sign the 7-point pledge that helps focus on specific ways that you can start to make a difference.

IMAGINE what you could do with Skyaak on a souped-up retractable tether. Major ACROBATIC FUN! AMAZING Scale Airspeeds. Flies smokin' fast and highly controllable! Capable of blended acrobatic stunts; from low orbit to far orbit to ferris wheel to halo to figure eight all in one sustained motion!

It is a future dream of ours to build an acrobatic aircraft that will be capable of dancing in the sky. We've extensively tether-tested a certain closed-wing configuration developed over the years and have found it to have remarkable acrobatic abilities.

It is an exceptionally stable craft. When it 's hand-launched, it tends to fly in a gentle, smooth trajectory, like it's being guided along on an invisible wire. It performs very well in tether-testing as well. When tether-flying it performs with surprisingly robust agility (once the center of gravity is exactly established). We want to introduce this idea to a wide audience to show off the amazing aerodynamic properties of the non-planar wing, and to insert the idea into the public consciousness; to pave the way for more acceptance.

You will be really impressed with the capabilities of this little craft, as it flies with a certain lucid responsiveness on the end of a tether, and also in free flight. With a tether, it is possible to reach very high speed (in scale) orbits, while maintaining complete tactile maneuverability.

You can't help but feel that this property bodes very well for the future development of this configuration. For instance, it is possible to execute a blended series of acrobatic maneuvers with subtle coaxing from the wrist and arm movements, with a retractable tether. One can execute a horizontal orbit, leading to a vertical loop, to a clockwise figure eight, and then can one can even stall the craft and snap into a clockwise figure eight. These maneuvers can all be executed in a seamless, blended series, with some practice and effort. This feature illustrates that the configuration exhibits a fine cutting edge with crisp dexterity, when flown on a tether.

We're all aware of how challenging it can be (and is) to generate funding support/investment in the introduction of 'innovative' aeronautical designs. This is why we currently explore the possibility of creating the first generation, basic model of the design as an inexpensive recreational/sports device so that a substantial R&D fund might be created in order to carry on with the development of the idea.

We are investigating having a set of vacuum molds manufactured this coming week by a high-tech firm here in Saskatoon, SK. This will permit us to carry on with the production of limited numbers of the high-fidelity product, that can be introduced as a working prototype. These molds may be tweaked and perfected as we go, but not without incurring major expense. This is an important consideration, as we are working with a fairly restricted budget at the moment.

We will soon thereafter be upgrading to a motorized version, and from there we'll introduce remote-control. We are doing all of this to illustrate the efficacy of the closed-wing design, and to hopefully create interest in the market that will stimulate some robust sales that will ultimately generate revenues that will allow the ongoing R&D to continue.

Our vision for this project would be to carry on with it's development so that it can make it available as a simple, inexpensive model that can be easily operated by hand, tether and/or RC.

We are committed to the notion that it vividly illustrates the tactile experience of acrobatic flight, and could offer an exciting hands-on experience to a wide audience. Think of it as 'ring-wing flight consciousness-raising' exercise that might receive broad acceptance in the public that could potentially create a source of substantial revenues that would allow the larger project to proceed.

What a Weird Image

The dark 'relief' areas really look like aliens to me. Or at least some strange, anthropomorphic creatures. Which is kinda cool considering that in reality ( if you will) the dark forms are in fact formless. They are cut-out bits, obviously. But in this case the 'negative space' takes on a sentient form. Things that make you go hmmm...

Lest you think I have totally lost my mind this time, let me assure you that I am only having fun with the rich mother-lode of imagery that I have stumbled into with the Skyaak project. Please let's not forget that I am 1st and foremost an artist. I get to take some liberties with little tangents. Who knows where they will lead us in the creative thought process?

You will note that there is a method to my madness. I am leading up to something here. The next photo I post will be a fully-loaded Skyaak UltraGlow, complete with glow-in-the-dark front and rear bumper trim!

When you see this, you will get why people are so horny to fly these things around after dark. I intend to post some video of the whole thing in the next little while. That is, several people playing around with Skyaak UltraGlow in the dark. Wearing glow-in-the-dark bracelets so you can get the idea. We are having a blast with this!

From Frustration to Success

A Contemporary Parable

Once there was a man who said he would help his wife weed the garden.

He was no expert gardener, but knew enough to go ahead on his own. Or so he thought.

He settled down to work, surveying the vast abundance of weeds. There were way more weeds than planted stuff. He had helped his wife sow the garden so he knew where the rows were. They were marked by stakes.

He started the painstaking work of isolating what he figured were pea plants out from all the mess of weeds. Looking around, he could not really see a row of pea plants. He thought that they were a bit thin here and persevered picking out all of the arm-fulls of weeds to reveal the straggly ‘pea’ plants.

A full hour later, he had little to show for his efforts.

“Man!” he thought. “There must be an easier way to do this!”

Just then his farmer friend who owned the property pulled up in his pick-up truck.

His friend joined him in the garden and informed him that he was weeding out a...weed! He was weeding out buck-wheat, which is a weed and NOT what he thought it was. To the inexperienced eye, buck-wheat is a pale imitation of a pea plant. It has spade-shaped leafs that spiral around a vine. Similarly, a pea plant has a heart-shaped leaf and grows on a vine.

Zoinks! He had just spent over an hour in the hot sun weeding out weeds.

On the bright side, his friend’s salient nugget of information provided a rapid answer to his desire to discover a quicker and easier way to weed the garden. His friend, a veteran gardener, knew exactly what to do and was happy to share his experience. Set on a more correct trajectory the man was able to plow through the remainder of the entire garden within only a couple more hours. The farmer’s advice came at just the right time and provided a sure-fire means to succeed at the task at hand. Before this important tip he was pretty much wasting his time in a state of idle.

In much the same way, you as an entrepreneur must recognize the fact that you likely cannot do everything required to launch your fabulous new idea or product. If you are struggling in a state of idle despite your best intentions you might want to ask yourself if you are weeding out the buck-wheat instead of the peas. In other words, is there a critical piece of information that you are lacking? You might not even realize it because you simply lack the experience (say, in marketing...) to isolate and deal with the weak area that is holding you back.

The man who thought he had the ability to weed the pea patch was fooling himself. He needed to consult with someone more expert to maximize his efforts. Failing to realize this, he has set out in vain to achieve an almost impossible task...to weed out the buck-wheat from a daunting mess of overgrown weeds.

You can appreciate in a very real way the contrast between the time when he labored in futility versus the time when he plowed ahead with confidence armed with the appropriate knowledge.

Identify and seek out the expertise that you need in order to launch your own enterprise. You will be delighted and surprised at how rapidly the universe will honor your intention!

What is Really Real?

The topic of inspiration is the most important issue in my life right now. How to stay inspired and self-motivated in the face of a deeply troubled world?

Does one have to shut out all of the bad stuff that is happening in the world all around us and just force a cheerful smile?

Can we really embrace the idea that the world is swinging towards a more healthy and wholesome state when all of this bad stuff is swirling around us on the evening news? I would love to be totally persuaded that one's personal state of mind has the power to transform the whole world to a better place and space.

A while back, I heard a gentleman state that his version of reality is this: The morning paper arrives on your doorstep. If the REALITY was reflected in this paper, the first inch or so of pages would be the bad news of the day. Put there in blaring headlines to sell papers. And then the rest of the paper ( ALL of the NEWS of the day!) would be a mile high stack of inspiring, uplifting stories of human triumph, small and large. Stories of the birth of perfectly lovely children; stories of small victories in everyday lives; stories of breakthroughs in scientific technology that hold great promise for the future of (wo)mankind and the planet...you get the idea.

I really like and prefer this vision of what's really REAL!

The Age of Alienation?

They say it’s lonely at the top. Well, it can also be lonely at the bottom. And everywhere in between. Enough of the stiff upper lip thing and pretending that everything is tickedy-boo. Because it isn’t. While it is very likely preferable to appear strong, focused, motivated and accomplished, the truth is some days I just want to pull my hair out. Another reality dose: it seems to me that the world in general is becoming more and more anti-social. Or non-social. It seems that everybody is out to vacuum a buck out of your wallet, or is suspicious that that’s what you are trying to do to them.

Ha! My cynical, jaded side is coming to the surface even after all of my stoic efforts to plug into the Law of Attraction to meet " all of the right people " and attract all of the things into my life that are my birthright as a thinking, creative spirit.

Sure, I have met some astonishing people both online and in my everyday life. Really. But you know what? I get this funny feeling that I am only one of millions of people that are beginning to get the impression that they are on the outside looking in.

I wonder what percentage of people plying the deep waters of the net actually feel that they have derived any tangible benefit from it? Yeah, there is the obvious feature of pretty much infinite information out there for anybody with a thirst for it. But when it comes to building relationships with real people, I wonder what the reality is.

Is this the age of Enlightenment or the Age of Alienation?

While I appreciate the potential of the internet with its groups, forums, social networking, websites, e-mail and the like to act as an amazing level playing field that can unite people together with common goals and dreams, I also see that this planetary force also has a dark side. It is just too easy to make promises and commitments visa-vis e-mail and then simply abandon them as frivolous.

If I were to stop and think about how many people have ‘promised’ to follow up on an idea over the past few months and have then simply faded away into the obscure muck of virtual anonymity that is just SO easy to do in a wired world, it would get a bit depressing. Whatever happened to the simple value and integrity of a person’s good word? Is this just another argument in favor of my little thesis that the world is getting more anti-social and dog-eat-dog or is it just that people are getting more lazy and less committed to honoring their word?

I would love it if you were to prove me wrong by dropping me a note to pick up my spirits. But I certainly won’t hold my breath. I DO have a real life and keep busy and productive in my own small corner of the world. Nothing earth-shaking. Just a guy trying to make an honest living. With an eye bent towards forging real relationships with real people whose word is worth something. Because mine is.

Any thoughts on this?

When Brendan O'Keefe first coined the expression "Skyaak is the Frisbee of the Future" in Melbourne, we all thought it sounded kinda cool so it became an unofficial slogan. The reality is, Skyaak is nothing at all like a Frisbee. They are totally different animals, governed by a whole different set of physical rules and properties. With totally different aerodynamic properties and totally different throwing and catching techniques! And they look nothing alike.

So perhaps the interim slogan is misleading. I think what Brendan meant by his proclamation is that Skyaak has the potential to become a huge buzz in the world of flying toys...and he has minted this fairly provocative phrase to set the gears in motion for his hopes and dreams of Skyaak getting bigger and bigger in the coming months and years ahead. Perhaps the man himself would be willing to comment on this?

This is one of the 1st photos sent to us from Australia. I really like this treatment of my good friend Brendan O'Keefe holding his Skyaak overlooking the Melbourne sky-line as shot by our intrepid vision-aire Max Milne. The panaramic effect is cool and the composition is very well-conceived. Looks kinda visionary...

Over Hill and Dale

This past weekend, my wife Sharon and I took a day trip down to Maple Creek, about a six-hour drive southwest of here. My eldest brother Doug had called a while ago to let us know that him and his wife Debbie were flying into Lethbridge, Alberta, for a family wedding and would we want to rendez-vous with them somewhere in between?

I picked Maple Creek because it is beautiful country, being snuggled right up to the famous Cyprus Hills and also because I have one of my big Historic Murals there. Thought it would be a good chance for my big brother to check out one of my major commissions.

Well, we hooked up and had a grand time touring around. We ended up renting a self-contained cabin at Historic Fort Walsh for the night. Had a great visit over a lovingly hand-made salad ensemble and bar-b-qued Rib-Eye steak. Yum yum! We brought our little portable propane barbie and I picked out the steaks right in Maple Creek. After all, this is prime cattle country. They better have fabulous steaks in town.

We were NOT disappointed. It was mouth-watering. Prolly the best steak I ever ate. I showed Doug and Deb my latest Skyaak models. The one with the router-cut wings and also a Night-Lit version. Doug said he was very impressed. Quite a ‘complex invention’. He seemed a bit surprised that I have taken it so far. It actually is looking totally professional. I am pretty proud of the accomplishment, that’s for sure.

After our all-too-short but extremely enjoyable visit, Sharon and I parted company with Doug and Deb. They took off to drive back to Calgary where they were catching a flight back to Nova Scotia the following day. We started off on our long drive home.

On the way into Gull Lake, we decided on the spot to check out the humungous wind-power generators off on the distant horizon at the top of the slope to the south. I had a feeling that these things were a lot further away than they looked...the old optical illusion where you figure it will be just over the next rise and once you gain the crest, you realize that it is still way, way off.

Well, we got right into it and started basically chasing down a cluster of the things, over hill and dale...literally. I figured there had to be a service road out to the base of the giant wind-mills so we bombed around on the back roads until we finally found the right access road that lead right past a whole battalion of them. HUGE does not describe these things. I figure each of the three props is at least 120 feet long. So that would mean the post is likely over 360 feet high. Whoa! That’s big.

That is one BIG structure...the picture shows a wind-turbine probably a half-mile away.

I had it in my head that I wanted to pose at the base of one of them with a Skyaak. Just because I thought it would look cool. And because I imagine that someday the Skyaak will become energy self-sufficient ( read GREEN powered ) and also that it will have a three-prop power plant to push/pull it along through the air. Just a bit of futuristic imaginings. Don’t quote me on it!

At last! We got right up to the base and then retreated for this shot.

So it was a blast to finally stand right where I had visualized to pose with a Skyaak. Remember though, the whole thing was Sharon’s idea. We both thought that it would be a fun little adventure to chase down one of these engineering marvels. Must point out that I am very proud to be living here in Saskatchewan where we are pursuing the exciting possibility of moving away from total energy dependence on fossil fuels. Yay us!

Addicted 2 Skyaak

Gene recently flew out to Nova Scotia and had a stopover in Dundas, Ontario. He brought a Skyaak along with him and took it out to the streets of Dundas while he was there. He had brought a Night-Lit version with him and apparently it was a hit with a bunch of guys there that he ran into. According to Gene, he was basically mobbed a few minutes after he started chucking his Skyaak around with his nephew Tim.

Good Times with SKYAAK!

I've been working out with a guy named Evan Reiffersheid here who has proven to be an exceptionally great Skyaak enthusiast. I have been quizzing him quite extensively and here is what I am finding out. More accurately, he is simply confirming what I already know after all my experience with Skyaak.

Evan says, first of all, that he was easily able to figure out ALL BY HIMSELF five or six different throwing techniques for the Skyaak. This is thanks to the fact that he has a background in sports and is keenly interested in the skill set that enables him to excel with his Skyaak.

He went on to say that he loves Skyaak ( he rates it above Frisbee for excitement ) for many reasons.

He claims that the Skyaak is valuable, stimulating and exciting to him because it functions as a TRAINER in these areas:

1) ambidextrous work-out

2) reflex builder

3) agility trainer

4) hand-to-eye coordination

5) muscle memory builder

This is an impressive list, and all of these areas get a solid, useful work-out whether you're conscious of it or not. Evan also says that since he has independently developed five distinctly different throwing techniques, he finds the Skyaak to have long-lasting appeal. In fact, he says Skyaak has become one of his favorite leisure-time activities!

On a scale of 1-10, Evan rates Skyaak at a 8.5 or higher for overall excitement, interest, and training benefit.

SKYAAK turns heads all over Melbourne!

News Just in from Melbourne:

Brendan O'Keefe was walking home from work today and as he made his 30 minute walk across the park through the streets he couldn't help but notice people staring at him. He had flashbacks to when he was a pop star, "must be looking particularly HOT today" he thought but then he passed a young family and BOOM, jaws dropped, kids cried out LOOK Mummy.

People on bikes took a second glance and the local police even slowed down. Boy oh boy, with a SKYAAK tucked under his back strap he soon realized having a SKYAAK on your person has some magical power!

Next he approached his favorite Wine shop to pick up a quality bottle of Margret River red and the magic spell was cast. There was a young woman working this special Friday evening, a casual staff member he'd never seen before. She immediately asked "What is that" "It's a SKYAAK, The Frisbee of the future" He replied. The young woman picked up a pen and paper and announced, "My boyfriend is Frisbee Mad!, He'd love a SKYAAK!"

She wrote down the website address and Brendan gave her his email address. "Tell your boyfriend to check it out and if he likes it email me and I'll drop one off!"

Joy, Joy, Joy. The SYAAK has landed.

Such is life...

A bit of background...As previously mentioned, my friend Brendan was going to get a young associate of his to present Skyaak at "Weaving with Light", a nano-technology conference being held in Melbourne. Brendan e-mailed me this AM feeling discouraged. His young pal 'wigged out' at the last minute and decided not to carry through with it. Such is the nature of youth, sometimes. They can be a fickle lot...and sometimes (though not always!!!) a bit unreliable. Hey! We all been there! So I wrote Brendan a bit of a morale booster in response:

Hi Brendan. I bet that was a hard letter for you to write. But thanks for filling me in. As I say, such is life...

Here's where the old expression kicks in: "Everything happens (or doesn't) for a reason."

Believe me, my friend, I have had a lot of rough landings ( mostly associated with people that do not follow through with their promises...) with this Skyaak trip. On the other hand, I have a burning faith that with perseverance and the right core group involved, it will sooner or later IGNITE and become a smash hit!

I guess I have to start putting more of that energy into the universe.

Did I mention that I have submitted Skyaak as a contender to appear on "The Dragon's Den" ?

I have no clue when if ever they will get back to me. Ya gotta get short-listed to start with. One can only hope....

SOOOO...please do not get discouraged. This is only a very minor speed-bump, lol.

Onward and upward, I say!

Look, I want to make something perfectly clear to you. I see Skyaak as a literal and metaphorical 'vehicle' to create massive amounts of wealth for a core group of people that have the skills, the connections, the contacts, the confidence, etc. to get it off the ground and nurture it along through various ways and means for it to become a global, perennial BEST-SELLER. As Jim "the Brutalizer" Friedman says " Skyaak may REVOLUTIONIZE the Frisbee World". ( Incidentally, Jim is another one of these people who maybe lacks conviction. He hasn't responded to 3 little notes I sent him asking about nudging ahead with his ideas...it would be rather nice if he would. Let's hope he's OK. I would just love to hear from him, big time.)

Besides the unavoidable fact that I am madly in love with the Skyaak project, my intention is to attract the exact right people who can work together as a team to pull this together. I will invest whatever energy/resources etc that are necessary into the project to get it up and running and then reap the financial benefits ( along with my partners of course!) so that we can carry on to focus on CREATING ART for ART'S SAKE without the constant drag of $$$ concerns.

That' s not asking for too much, is it?

Brendan, once this thing is up and running, I promise you that I will cut you in on such a huge piece of the action that it will make yer head spin! No pun intended.

Let's go right ahead and create a group of Skyaak millionaires, shall we?

I am REALLY excited about your concept of introducing the thing to Slingshot as a "Social Enterprise". That is a genius idea. Can we make it work?

I bet such an enterprise would generate very favorable FREE publicity. Big time. And that, my friend, is really the key to success with this project. Publicity in newspapers, magazines and TV. Along with the core group to make the whole thing happen.

Right. Did you get the strobe light LED on the front of your Skyaak to work? I know it's a bit tricky. But I think it looks really cool.

In the meantime I am really pumped about Max doing photos. I am perfectly happy to pay him cash money so he can add this assignment to his "Paid Projects" portfolio. I realize how important it is for Max to advance his professional career and I respect that.

I received this story in an e-mail this morning. I had read something like this before, but this time it really stuck. So I thought I would share it with you.



A Sense of a Goose

When you see geese flying along in "V" formation, you might consider what science has discovered as to why they fly that way. As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in "V" formation, the whole flock adds at least 71 percent greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own. People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.

When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone - and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those people who are headed the same way we are. When the head goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wing and another goose flies point. It is sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs, whether with people or with geese flying south.

Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. What messages do we give when we honk from behind? Finally - and this is important - when a goose gets sick or is wounded by gunshot, and falls out of formation, two other geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection. They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies, and only then do they launch out on their own, or with another formation to catch up with their group. If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other like that.
